Application of Artec Jet, Ray II, and Leo 3D Scanners in the Odawara Castle Digitization Project

This project is a prime example of the efficiency gained by combining three flagship Artec 3D scanners: Jet, Ray II, and Leo to process data from a global scale down to the finest details. Digitizing an entire large-scale heritage site like Odawara Castle (Japan) requires the coordination of various data acquisition technologies.

The Challenge

Odawara Castle features a vast survey area, complex terrain, and unique architectural details. The requirement was to collect high-precision point cloud data with full surface structure while optimizing field time to avoid disrupting tourist activities.

The Combination of the Artec Jet, Ray II, and Leo 3D Scanning Trio

To solve this problem, the digitization process was divided into three stages corresponding to the technical characteristics of each machine:

Artec Jet – Large-Scale Existing Condition Digitization

In the initial stage, the Artec Jet 3D scanner was used to establish the global data framework for the entire castle grounds.

  • Technology: LiDAR SLAM with an acquisition speed of 2,000,000 points/second.

  • Scanning Range: Up to 300 meters.

  • Accuracy: 1-2cm error in wide-area field environments.

  • Application: Establishing a 3D map for the entire walking route around the castle without the need for tripods or complex positioning systems.

Artec Ray II – High-Rise Architectural Data Collection

For towers and high wall systems, the Artec Ray II 3D scanner was deployed to capture long-range laser data with absolute stability.

  • Point Accuracy: 1.9mm @ 10m; 2.9mm @ 20m.

  • Angular Accuracy: 0.8 arcsec (superior in industrial metrology tasks).

  • Scanning Distance: From 0.5m to 130m.

  • Imaging System: 36 MP HDR Camera providing 1:1 true color for point cloud data.

Artec Leo – Detail Processing and Confined Spaces

In areas requiring high resolution such as intricate carvings, steps, or narrow interior spaces, the Artec Leo 3D scanner was the primary device.

  • 3D Accuracy: Up to 0.1 mm.

  • 3D Resolution: 0.2 mm.

  • Data Processing Speed: 35 million points/second.

  • Scanning Capability: Completely wireless, integrated 5.5-inch touchscreen, and a dedicated AI processor, allowing for real-time data density checks during operation.

Efficiency of the Integrated Solution

The simultaneous combination of the three Artec 3D scanner lines through Artec Studio software created a complete “Digital Twin.” The merged data possesses high consistency, effectively serving various purposes:

  • Data storage for heritage preservation.

  • Inspection of errors and structural deformation over time.

  • Reverse engineering and precise restoration drawings.
