First 3D model of the human brain created

Scientists have created a high-resolution 3D digital model of the human brain, dubbed “Big Brain”.

To make the model, the researchers had to cut the brain sample into 7,400 slices, with 80 billion neurons, and it took 10 years to complete. The team had to dye each slice to reveal the anatomical details and then scan them into a high-resolution computer. The final step was to assemble the whole thing and scan it into the computer.

This model allows anatomists to clearly observe the smallest details, even details smaller than a strand of hair. With Big Brain, scientists can study from the separate layers of the cerebral cortex to its cells.

Professor Katrin Amunts from the Julich Research Center in Germany said: “In previous brain models, like using Google Earth, you could see the details, but not as clearly as with this 3D model.”

Brain and neurological disorders are a huge burden on society. The challenge is how to build enough knowledge, allowing us to develop drugs and treatments to help patients and their families.

With this model, scientists can scan patients’ brains to learn more about eating disorders. In addition to high-quality brain scans, scientists can observe in detail the level at which the brain’s computations take place.

Currently, the US is carrying out important projects on brain research. A few weeks ago, US President Obama announced a 64 million euro project to map the human brain, helping to find cures for disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.
