3D digitization project of the Amitabha Buddha statue on Fansipan peak (Sapa – Lao Cai)

The project of the 21.5m high Amitabha Buddha statue and 18 2.5m high Arhats made of bronze placed on the top of Fansipan (Sa Pa – Lao Cai) belonging to Sungroup is one of the 3D Scan projects of the largest digitization category of Buddha statues of Scantech Vietnam Company.

Scantech Vietnam was selected to implement the project as an independent 3D Inspection unit by 3D digitization, providing measurement standards to ensure accuracy according to international standards (VDI/VDE) in calculating area, volume, mass, weight… helping investors have a reference basis for the contractor’s parameters, in order to control accuracy scientifically and objectively.

Below is an image of the entire 3D digitization process for the project within 2 years (2015-2017). The digitization steps are divided into 2 phases. Phase 1: 3D digitization of the 1/6 scale Amitabha statue on the ground. Convert to 1/1 scale to calculate area, volume, and mass.

Phase 2: 3D digitization of 1/1 scale Amitabha statue model on bronze material. The investor will base on this actual result to accept the entire volume.

Scanners used for the project:

Ziess TScan CS handheld 3D scanner (Made in Germany)     Set of 3 3D scanners Artec Eva & Artec Space Spider (Made in Luxembourg)
Using the entire handheld scanner system of Zeiss (Germany) and Artec (Luxemburg) for 3D digitization. This is a handheld scanner system that allows flexible movement on all terrains. Especially, there is no need to use stickers to identify common points with other types of scanners. Very fast scanning speed of 2 million points/second. Fully automatic meshing software. 3D accuracy level: 0.05 mm – 0.1mm. Software used for the project: Geomagic Studio Geomagic DesignX software.

Chairman of Sungroup Le Viet Lam and General Director of Scantech Vietnam Nguyen Minh Khoi at the “Rehearsal Ceremony of the 1/6 scale Amitabha Statue Model. Fansipan Cultural Tourism Complex Project, Entertainment Area, Tourism Services and Hotel (Sapa – Lao Cai)
Sungroup Chairman Le Viet Lam took a souvenir photo with Prof. Dr. Architect Hoang Dao Kinh: Member of the National Cultural Heritage Council and General Director of Scantech Vietnam Company Nguyen Minh Khoi: Unit in charge of Non-contact 3D Inspection. With the parties involved in the construction of the Project.
Up to now, this is the tallest bronze Buddha statue in Vietnam (21.5 m). The statue was cast using thin-shell technology and assembled from tens of thousands of 5 mm thick copper plates processed on site, mounted on an iron frame structure with a volume of nearly 1,000 m3. To build such a large Buddha statue at an altitude of 3,413 m on the top of Fansipan – a place affected by an extremely harsh climate (weather changes continuously: 4 seasons in 1 day) is a miracle, an unprecedented precedent.
